The Netherlands is often unofficially called Holland. 'Hol' refers to holt' - an old word for 'wood', and there are indeed extensive regions with forests and woods. Landscapes are often a combination of low sand dunes, heather covered heaths, and sections of pasture meadows. The largest national park in the Netherlands is called the De Hoge Veluwe, and covers over 5,500 hectares and is situated in the mid-eastern part of the country near the town of Apeldoorn. The park is traversed by many cycle paths and there is almost no motorized traffic.
