5 days - 4 nights

Day 1 - Local ride in Borger
Take a train to Assen (e.g. from Amsterdam, 1 hrs 50 minutes and no transfers, Euro 25 per ticket). A tour leader will pick you up at the railway station at 14.00 hrs (2 pm) and then the shuttle (20 min) brings you to your hotel in the center of the enchanting little village of Borger. The Borger region is famous for its Hunebedden (dolmen or giant's grave) which are reckoned to be 5,500 years old, and basically large stone graves. Check-in, equipment delivery and instructions and a local bike ride before dinner. After dinner a local historian will give a presentation about the Drenthe landscape and the local evolution.

Day 2 - The eastern peat region
On the second day you will explore the southeastern part of Drenthe, a lower peat region. This is a beautiful cycling route in a landscape of woods and wetlands, traversed by many canals - the result of modern Dutch nature management.

Day 3 - Along Camp Westerbork to Dwingeloo
Today the route leads to Dwingeloo. The landscape gradually changes into a dryer and higher area with sand dunes and heath lands, dotted with bushes and groups of trees. Do not expect any hard climbs here, because ‘high’ in Holland mostly means no more than 50 mtrs/150 ft! Halfway along the route you will pass Camp Westerbork. From 1942 to 1944 this was a WW II transit camp from where thousands of Jews and people against Nazism were deported to concentration camps elsewhere in Europe. Visit to the Memorial Center and a guided walking along the surrounding grounds and barracks. The hotel in village of Dwingeloo is an authentic family hotel where modern comfort goes hand in hand with personal hospitality. The view from the hotel situated on the old market square, or the brink as it is called in Holland, and the surrounding ancient buildings is breathtaking.

Day 4 - The western woods
Day four of the tour is a circular cycle trip through the woodlands and heath lands in national and regional parks. A fairytale landscape, dotted with ‘elfin villages’, farm worker hamlets and imposing, thatched farmhouses. En route you will have plenty of opportunities for stops, and enjoying a large cup of tea or coffee, accompanied by a delicious piece of local Drenthe baking. This is relaxation at its best.

Day 5 - Along Orvelte and back to Borger
On the final day, a southern route will take you back to Borger. Halfway along the route we will visit the museum village of Orvelte. An excellent place for a guided walking tour and a special lunch, prepared with local ingredients. You will arrive in Borger in the middle of the afternoon and be taken to the railway station in Assen.
