Itinerary

6 days - 5 nights

The Dutch Hanseatic cities of Doesburg, Zutphen, Deventer, Hattem, Zwolle, Kampen and Hasselt are situated on the banks of the River Yssel. These seven cities were once important centers of commerce and culture. The glorious history of the medieval Hanseatic League has left many traces behind and nowadays these cities have become extremely interesting and attractive tourist destinations.

Day 1 – To Zwolle
The tour bus picks you up at 14.00 (2 pm) in Amsterdam and takes you to Zwolle (1.5 hours transfer). After equipment instructions and a welcome dinner, a historian will give a lecture on Dutch Hanseatic history.

Day 2 – The small Hanseatic towns
55km/34mi
Today we bike through the northern lowlands, passing along Hasselt, Kampen and Hattem. This area is considered to be the delta area of the River Yssel and so these small Hanseatic towns were often subjected to flooding.

Day 3 – Cycling along the River Vecht
55km/34mi
We cycle eastwards along the River Vecht. This is a slightly higher region and it is dotted with farmhouses and small villages. In late afternoon there is a guided walking tour through the historic town center of Zwolle.

Day 4 – To Deventer and Zutphen
55km/34mi
The route continues along the River Yssel to Zutphen. We stop for lunch at the halfway point in the historic town center of Deventer. The hotel in Zutphen is located in a quiet area of the historic city center.

Day 5 – Loop tour to Doesburg
50km/31mi
Today we continue cycling along the River Yssel to the southernmost Hanseatic town of Doesburg where we take a wooded route back along the western bank of the river back to Zutphen.

Day 6 – Exploring Zutphen
The tour finishes after breakfast on the last day with a guided walking tour through the historic town center of Zutphen. The shuttle bus takes you back to Amsterdam before lunch.
